Career Exploration Summer Camps

Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce, Today

Middle school is an incredible time for students to learn about themselves and consider their futures. That’s why multiple state agencies are teaming up to ask South Dakota businesses to consider sponsoring future Dakota Dreams Career Exploration Camps for 7th and 8th grade students.

By supporting these middle school career camps, your company can help students explore future careers, develop early skills, and discover pathways they never knew existed.

Calling all South Dakota Businesses!

Since 2022, the Dakota Dreams Career Exploration Camps have inspired hundreds of South Dakota middle schoolers to explore meaningful, hands-on career paths. These four-day residential camps provide students entering 7th and 8th grade with an unforgettable experience—one that could shape the rest of their educational and professional lives.

However, due to changes in federal funding, future camps have been canceled —unless we find new partners to bring them back.

That’s where your business comes in.

Program Overview

Our Dakota Dreams, a partnership between the South Dakota Department of Education (DOE) and the South Dakota Board of Regents (BOR), implemented career exploration camps for 7th and 8th grade students during the summers of 2022, 2023, and 2024. These camps were funded by federal dollars available to the DOE and were free to students. The career exploration camps were a huge success, exposing nearly 1,800 middle school students to career interests during their most formative years.

Dakota Dreams Career Exploration Camps are four-day residential summer camps for middle school students held at colleges across the state. Campers spend time with instructors from universities and technical colleges, take field trips to area businesses, participate in interactive exercises and more, gaining a better understanding of themselves, their career interests and how their education prepares them for professions.
