11th Grade Math Courses
Students who take math all four years of high school tend to perform better in their first year of college compared to those who stop at the minimum graduation requirements. To set yourself up for success, use the information below to choose the best math course for your career goals.
Talk with your school counselor or a college admissions advisor to explore your options and eligibility. If available, consider taking High School Dual Credit (HSDC) or Advanced Placement (AP) math courses—these can be both challenging and rewarding, helping you build strong skills for college and beyond.
High school students should consider taking their highest aptitude math course to prepare for college because:
Algebra II
If you haven’t taken Algebra II yet, it’s highly recommended that you do. This course provides you with the foundations you need to be successful in college-level math. Plus, data suggests that students who take four years of math in high school are more successful in college.
Math Electives
Math courses such as Business Math, Consumer Math, Basic Statistics, etc. are courses offered at high school and can be selected according to student interest. These courses are not considered advanced math courses so do not meet curriculum requirements for the South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship.
Math for College Readiness
This semester-long course, taught by the NSU E-Learning Center, is designed for high school students who are college bound but who may need some additional preparation to be successful in college math. Students who successfully complete this course can either elect to continue to HSDC College Algebra (MATH 114) with the same teacher the following semester (i.e., the Year-Long College Algebra course). Or they will be directly placed into college-level math once they enroll at a SD public university without the requirement to place into the course.

High School Dual Credit (HSDC) Courses
High School Dual Credit (HSDC) courses give high school students who meet admissions standards the opportunity to enroll in public technical colleges and universities in South Dakota while still in high school. Students taking HSDC courses simultaneously earn credits for both their high school diploma and college degree or certificate. If completed successfully, a HSDC math course could fulfill the student’s math requirement for a related degree while attending college.

High School Advanced Placement (AP) Courses
High School Advanced Placement (AP) courses demonstrate academic rigor and a willingness to challenge oneself, which can make you more college ready. AP courses are high school courses with the option for college credit. For the course to count for college credits, you must sit for the AP exam after you complete your AP course. A score of 3 or higher will allow college credit for the course. You must send your AP scores directly to your college admission office.
