This scholarship was created in memory of David Jay Schmidt by his siblings. Born in 1953 as the sixth child in a family of 10 children, David grew up on a farm near Dell Rapids and, following his high school graduation, he joined the US Navy hoping to earn enough money to put himself through college. His dream was to attend Georgia Tech to study engineering and play football. David passed away at 19 years old after an accident at Oak Harbor Naval Station on Whidbey Island, Washington.
