SD MINES Summer Camps 2026 – Musical Electronics 2

This camp will allow students to explore the basics of electronics and how a few simple elements can be used to generate amazingly diverse arrangements of tones, beats and effects. We will take you from the basic skills of soldering and programming to constructing your own music generating machines. Each student will take home an electronic instrument they build. No background in electronics or music is required.

SD MINES Summer Camps 2026 – Musical Electronics 1

This camp will allow students to explore the basics of electronics and how a few simple elements can be used to generate amazingly diverse arrangements of tones, beats and effects. We will take you from the basic skills of soldering and programming to constructing your own music generating machines. Each student will take home an electronic instrument they build. No background in electronics or music is required.

SD MINES Summer Camps 2026 – STEM Exploration

Explore different engineering and science degrees during this 4-day camp. Each day students will get a mini presentation on two different STEM fields with hands on activities. Each session is presented by prestigious faculty whose expertise gives campers a glimpse into STEM careers and gets them excited about their education.

On Thursday afternoon parents join us on campus to learn more about what their campers experienced and an optional campus tour.

SD MINES Summer Camps 2026 – Physics @ South Dakota Mines

New! Physics camp at South Dakota Mines. Ran by our Physics department. Keep checking back on the website for new info!

SD MINES Summer Camps 2026 – Geology Rocks

The Geology Rocks! summer camp provides high school students with the opportunity to learn about potential careers in the geosciences. Campers observe the world-renowned Black Hills geology and the role it plays in surface and ground-water quality, geologic hazards, mineral resources, and paleontology. Potential field trips include:

From the ancient rock layers of the Black Hills, to the crystals and natural formations of area caverns and the fossils in the Badlands, the unique geology of the Black Hills region makes Geology Rocks! a one-of-a-kind camp available only at South Dakota Mines. Topics that students will learn about — through real experiences or hands-on learning activities — include:

Discussion of minerals, rocks and fossils, and their relation to Black Hills geologic history
Basic geologic concepts
Topographic and geologic map use as well as compass navigation
The importance of water both to society and geologic processes
Mineral exploration and extraction
Rock and mineral collection!
An active gold mine
A cave tour
The Mammoth Site
Badlands National Park
Many other sites of geologic interest throughout the Black Hills
The experiences in this camp will inspire students to better understand the natural world and to be able to interpret the stories that are contained in the rocks and landforms around us

SD MINES Summer Camps 2026 – The Science of Pottery and Glass

The unique minerals of the Black Hills region provide the perfect ingredients to form colorful pottery and glasses. This summer day camp provides high school students with a novel experience to learn about the science behind the creation of pottery (ceramics) and glasses through hands-on laboratory activities using Black Hills minerals. The experiences in this camp will inspire students to better understand mineral resources and how to utilize them to create functional materials. Topics covered in the camp will include:

Color Theory (learn the science and art of using color)
Clay-body Formation (create your own clay recipe)
Clay-body Processing (learn pottery techniques such as pinch pots, coil pots, and throwing pottery)
Glaze Creation (learn glaze recipe chemistry)
Glass Forming (conduct glass fusing and torch-work)
Characterization (conduct scanning electron microscopy)

SD MINES Summer Camps 2026 – It’s Rocket Science

Join our Physics department as they work to discover the secrets of the time-space continuum (and more)…

Physics is the foundation of science. Every other field builds upon its concepts and principles. If you know physics, you know how to model and predict a system. If you can predict a system, you can control it. In other words, physics teaches you how to control the universe!!! Muhahahah…. “ahem”, uh, as I was saying;

In this day camp we’ll explore some of the many fields of physics, from Newtonian mechanics and the physics of weather systems; to particle physics, neutrinos and the search for dark matter; to astrophysics. We will visit state-of-the art research laboratories, conduct our own experiments, and use what you learn to construct and launch your own rocket!

SD MINES Summer Camps 2026 – Camp Biomed

Students will explore the world of Biomedical Engineering, a field on the cutting edge of science, engineering, and modern medicine. Learn from doctorate level faculty, graduate biomedical engineering students, and industry partners while participating in hands-on, hi-tech activities. Join our Biomedical Engineering faculty for this exciting summer day camp!

SD MINES Summer Camps 2026 – Chemistry Camp

THIS CAMP IS CURRENTLY FULL.

Explore the expanding and ever-changing world of Color Chemistry in this exciting, hands-on career camp! Throughout the week you won’t just be completing experiments – you’ll build real scientific skills as you uncover how color reveals the hidden workings of chemistry, biology, and forensic science.

Your Mission: Explore the Colorful World of Chemistry – From Crime Labs to Cells To Fireworks!

Featured Projects & Investigations

Forensic TLC Crime Analysis
Become a crime lab chemist! Use thin-layer chromatography (TLC) to analyze “mystery inks,” compare evidence samples, and interpret chromatograms just like real forensic investigators.

Enzyme Activity Color Assay
Step into the world of biochemistry using color-changing enzyme reactions. Measure enzyme activity by monitoring color intensity and explore how temperature, pH, and inhibitors affect reaction rates.

Flame Test: Colors of the Elements
Discover how fire can expose the “fingerprints” of elements. Perform flame tests to see how different metals create brilliant colors—just like in fireworks and pyrotechnic design.

And More
From pH indicators and pigments to separation science and chemiluminescence, you’ll explore the kaleidoscope of chemistry through safe, exciting, and visually unforgettable experiments.

Why This Matters:

This camp goes beyond simple experiments—you’ll learn how chemistry powers modern technology, crime labs, pharmaceuticals, environmental testing, and even art. By completing your Color Chemistry Demonstration Kit, you’ll prove that chemistry isn’t just something you read about in textbooks—it’s a dynamic, colorful force shaping the world around us.
