Virtual High School Mining & Explosives Camp
Mining Engineering Camp
Join us for our FREE Virtual Mining & Explosive Camp. If you are unable to travel to South Dakota this summer to attend one of our in-person camps. The virtual camp will meet on July 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th for 2 hours each day from 10 AM to 12 PM MDT. During the camp, we will have information sessions on various topics related to mining and explosives. And to make things more interactive, we will have fun quizzes (Kahoot!) and interesting videos….lots of blasting videos! All you will need for this camp is some time, a desire to learn about mining and explosives, and a computer or tablet with a speaker and microphone.
We hope you will be able to join us! Once you register, we will send you a confirmation email. We will send out the Zoom meeting links about one week before the camp. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions.

STEM Exploration Camp
Do you like Math or Science? Then this is the camp for you. Our emphasis on hands-on-learning provides a unique opportunity to answer the questions: “Is this field right for me?” “Which path do I want to take?” and “Where will it take me?”
Explore different engineering and science degrees during this 4-day camp. Each day students will get a mini presentation on two different STEM fields with hands on activities. Each session is presented by prestigious faculty whose expertise gives campers a glimpse into STEM careers and gets them excited about their education.
On Thursday afternoon parents join us on campus to learn more about what their campers experienced and an optional campus tour.

Camp BioMed
Biomedical Engineering Camp
Explore the expanding and ever-changing world of biomedical engineering in this hands-on career camp!
Students will explore the world of Biomedical Engineering, a field on the cutting edge of science, engineering, and modern medicine. Learn from doctorate level faculty, graduate biomedical engineering students, and industry partners while participating in hands-on, hi-tech activities.
Join our Biomedical Engineering faculty for this exciting summer day camp! Camp will run 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. Lunch will be provided for campers.
Thursday at 1:00 PM we invite parents to come on campus for a cookie reception followed by a campus visit for the family.
Intended Audience: Grades 8th-12th
Ever wanted to control your house lights, or make your fan turn on automatically? How about creating an alarm system to keep your little sister out of your room? All you need are some sensors and a little programming knowledge.
This camp will introduce the student to the basics of Python programming, working with micro-computers and how to read and control “smart” home sensors. Each student will use and keep their own microbit computer and develop a smart home project. No prior coding experience is needed.
Intended Audience: Grades 9-12th
Green Chemistry Camp
Let’s Treat the Earth with Respect!
The goals of the “Green Chemistry Camp: Treat the Earth with Respect” activities are:
Do you have a passion for the environment and a knack for chemistry? If your answer is yes, Green Chemistry day camp is for you!
Green chemistry is on the cutting edge of the industry – using chemistry to develop cleaner, safer, renewable energy sources. At this unique camp, students will gain a basic knowledge of green chemistry and sustainability in order to understand how the synthetic world of chemistry can interface with the natural world.
Campers will engage in hands-on experiments and in-depth discussions surrounding the role of chemistry in everyday life. They will learn the 12 principles of green chemistry:
Prevent waste
Design Safer chemicals and products
Design less hazardous chemical syntheses
Use safer solvents/reaction conditions
Increase energy efficiency
Use renewable feedstocks
Design chemicals and products that degrade after use
Minimize the potential for accidents
Analyze in real time to prevent pollution
Use catalysts, not stoichiometric reagents
Maximize atom economy
Avoid chemical derivatives

Science of Swords
Science of Swords – An Elite Bladesmithing Experience is an immersive, four-day workshop for high school students to conduct bladesmithing and experience the Science of Swords!
Students will work directly with master blacksmith Mr. Jack Parks (Fire Steel Forge) to create a chef’s knife using traditional forging and heat-treating techniques. In addition to daily hands-on forging and blacksmithing activities, students will also explore the science and engineering principles behind blade-making under the guidance of Metallurgical Engineering Department Head Dr. Michael West. This component will include investigation of the scientific literature (ASM Handbooks, Materials Science and Engineering – An Introduction by Callister & Rethwisch) and laboratory testing. This is an elite workshop limited to 10 students.
Scientific/engineering principles will include:
Structure of metals
Principles of metalworking and forging
Processing and hardening of blades by heat treatment
Characterization of metals through advanced microscopy
Blade testing and performance
